Burlington Bounces Back with Close Win Over Springfield

Burlington, IA – 13 runs across three innings was enough for the Burlington Bees (18-7, 29-22) to hold off the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes (8-16, 19-30) by a final score of 13-11 on July 25 at Community Field. 

A four-run top of the third inning for Springfield gave them a 4-0 lead before Tate Slagle (Iowa) and Troy Peltz (Iowa Western) each blasted three-run homers to put Burlington ahead.

That started a streak of 13 straight runs scored by the Bees, as they added two more in the fourth. Sean Kang (SIU-Edwardsville) drove home Dalton Miller (Georgia Gwinnett) with a 

triple and later scored on a wild pitch to put Burlington up 8-4. Lane Spieker (Mount Mercy) hit the Bees' third three run home run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, plating Peltz and Adam Kudronowicz (Iowa Western). The other two runs of the frame came on a Slagle sacrifice fly and a Kade Knock (Mount Mercy) triple.Mitchell Cox tossed scoreless fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to earn his second win of the season. 

Burlington led by nine going into the seventh, but Springfield would roar back with two in the seventh, and three in the eighth to make it a 13-9 game. 

After a two-run double with two outs in the ninth cut the Bees lead to two, but Jake Weissenberger (Mount Mercy) got General Schofield to ground out to end the game. With the win and a Clinton loss, Burlington jumps back into first place in the Northwest Division. They'll end the week back at home tomorrow, hosting Quincy at 4:00 pm at Community Field.
