Bees Hold on to Defeat Paddlers For 10th Straight Win

Quincy, IL – Kole Sonnenburg (Mount Mercy) delivered five shutout innings to keep the Burlington Bees (16-7, 27-21) up by three going into the ninth. After a two-run home run by Brodie Short of Quincy to make it a one-run game, Zach Troxel (Indiana Wesleyan) came in to get the final two outs as the Bees defeated the Quincy Doggy Paddlers (6-13, 22-24) by a score of 7-6 at QU Stadium on July 22. 

Juan Fernandez (SCC) started the scoring in the top of the first on an RBI double down the left field line to score Jace Figuereo (South Dakota State) from first.  In the bottom half of the inning, Brady Kindhart of the Paddlers blasted a two-run homer to put Quincy in front. 

Burlington struck back for two in the top of the second as Fernandez singled in Sean Kang (SIU-Edwardsville) and PJ Hamel (McHenry County) to retake the lead at 3-2. Quincy would jump back ahead with a run in the bottom of the second as well as the third to go up 4-3. 

A three-run top of the fourth inning allowed the Bees to leap back in front, as Christian Graves (Mount Mercy) drove in Hamel and a wild pitch allowed Dalton Miller (Georgia Gwinnett) and Fernandez to score to put Burlington in front at 6-4. Sonnenburg came in for the fourth and struck out seven Paddlers in five scoreless frames. The only Bees run in that stretch came in the sixth on a Graves single. 

In a 7-4 game going into the ninth, Quincy would score twice before Troxel recorded a groundout and a flyout to end the game. 

Burlington has now won 10 straight games, which is the longest active winning streak in the Prospect League. The Bees are back on the road tomorrow, traveling to NelsonCorp Field to take on the Clinton LumberKings each of the next two days. First pitch for tomorrow's clash in Clinton is set for 6:30 pm.
