Burlington Beats Alton for 7th Straight Win

Burlington, IA – The Burlington Bees (13-7, 24-21) scored 12 of the first 14 runs as they held on to defeat the Alton River Dragons (2-15, 4-39) by a final score of 12-9 at Community Field on July 18. Alton scored a run in the first inning before Burlington answered with three runs on RBIs from Lane Spieker (Mount Mercy), Sean Kang (SIU-Edwardsville), and Dalton Miller (Georgia Gwinnett). The two teams would trade runs in the second inning before the Bees scored the games next eight runs to go up 12-2. Kade Knock (Mount Mercy) had two doubles today, with one of them being in the third to drive home Miller. In the bottom of the fourth, Kang and Lucas Krebs (Illinois) each had RBI singles in a sevenrun inning. The other four runs scored off a hit by pitch and three bases loaded walks. Alton pitcher Griffin Kelly tossed five scoreless inning out of the bullpen to keep the River Dragons in the game as they would go on to score the final seven runs of the game against the Burlington bullpen before the middle of the Bees infield turned a double play to end the game. Tate Slagle (Iowa) started on the mound for Burlington. The right hander threw four innings, allowing two runs while striking out six batters. Payton Hodges (Mount Mercy) received the win for his three-inning effort out of the bullpen. Burlington's win streak has reached seven games, their longest of the season to pull them within a half game of first place in the Northwest Division. The Bees are back at home tomorrow afternoon, taking on the Quincy Doggy Paddlers with the first pitch set for 4:00pm at Community Field.
