Bees Breakout in Game 2 to Force Doubleheader Split
Burlington, IA – 10 unanswered runs fueled the Burlington Bees (10-13) in game two of a doubleheader against the Quincy Doggy Paddlers (14-10) as they defeated Quincy 12-2 in five innings after the Paddlers took game 1 3-2 at Community Field on June 23. Game 1 Quincy jumped out to a 2-0 lead off starting pitcher TJ Hauser (UW-Milwaukee) on a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout. The fourth inning saw a big momentum flip in the game, as Hauser stranded the bases loaded on a groundball double play. In the bottom half of the inning, the Bees tied the score at two on RBI singles from Kolt Kurzman (Mount Mercy) and Gage Handzel (Winthrop). The difference maker in game one came in the top of the seventh inning, when Ben Longoria recorded an RBI single to make the score 3-2. The Bees were retired in order in the bottom half of the frame. Game 2Burlington's offense came alive in game two. Rowen Bergeron (LSU-Eunice) hit two run homers in the second and fourth innings to extend his streak to three consecutive at bats with a home run, dating back to Saturday's game against Clinton. He was responsible for driving in each of the first four runs for the Bees. The score was 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth before Burlington scored five runs with two outs. Bergeron's second homer of the game began the scoring. An error allowed the third run of the inning to come across home before Johnnie Ankenbruck (Huntington) homered to left field for his first long ball of the summer to put the Bees up by five. Five more runs scored in the bottom of the fifth to enact the 10 run rule. Troy Peltz (Iowa Western) doubled to right to bring in Lucas Krebs (Illinois). Adam Kudronowicz (Iowa Western) scored on a wild pitch before Tanner Reinartz (Huntington) singled in Peltz. The final two runs of the game scoring on a Quincy error with the bases loaded and nobody out. Mitchell Cox (Bethany Lutheran) started on the mound for the Bees, going three innings while surrendering two runs. Spencer Spinks (Triton) pitched two scoreless innings out of relief, earning the win. With the loss in game one, the Bees are eliminated from playoff contention in the first half. They return home tomorrow night to take on Illinois Valley. First pitch is set for 6:30 pm at Community Field.
