Ninth-Inning Surge Gives Burlington Fourth Straight Win
Springfield, IL - The Burlington Bees (19-18, 7-4) concluded their six-game road trip with an 8-5 victory over the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes (10-27. 2-9) July 11 at Robin Roberts Stadium
Burlington has won four-straight, matching its longest win streak of the season.
The game was the last-leg of a six game road-trip.
The Bees scored three-runs in the top of the ninth to ensure a one-run lead.
Before that, the game was 0-0 going into the third inning.
Caleb Klein (SCC) doubled to lead off the third frame. He finished two for three with three walks and runs.
Jeremy Figueroa (Mt.Mercy) also had a two-base knock for his first hit of the year. His first RBI got the team on the board.
Corey Boyette (Lipscomb) and Kooper Schulte (Iowa) walked to load the bases.
Lincoln Cardwell (Parkland) also registered his first hit, singling in the infield to plate one. It was his debut.
Dylan Shepherd (Ohio) hit a sacrifice fly and Colin Schmitke (SCC) singled to score two more. Schmitke has 13 RBI in 17 games.
Springfield answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Burlington tagged on another in the fourth, beginning on a Klein single. He would steal second and finish the game with the team-lead in stolen bases. The team stole five bags.
Schulte brought him home on an infield single to make it 5-3. The Hawkeye has 29 RBI on the season.
Neither team would score until the eighth inning.
Colten Clarahan (SCC) got the start and threw four innings. He allowed three runs while striking out three.
Parker Lewin (Minnesota) got the win. He tossed two scoreless with three strikeouts. The righty left the bases loaded in the sixth.
Mitch Cox (Crown College) came up with 1.2 innings of one run ball. Springfield scored in the bottom of the eighth to pull within one.
Braeden Sunken (Maryville) entered in the eighth with the bases loaded and one-out. He recorded a groundout and strikeout.
With one out in the ninth, Burlington manufactured an answer. Schmitke kicked it off with a walk.
Marcus Beatty registered his first hit on an infield single. It was also his debut.
Both runners advanced on a wild-pitch. Klein walked to load the bases.
Another wild pitch scored Schmitke and advanced two into scoring position.
Boyette came up clutch, hitting a double into the gap to make it 8-5. It was his 11th extra-base hit and got him to 26 RBI on the year.
Sunken received his sixth save of the year, which is second in the league.
Lewin got the win to move to 3-0. Sebastian Gutierrez got the loss.
Springfield travels to Peru to take on the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp (17-20, 6-6). The game begins at 4:05 p.m.
Burlington returns home to take on the Clinton LumberKings (27-10, 9-3) at 6:30 p.m.
