Burlington Wins First July 3rd Game

Burlington, IA - The fireworks came both during and after the game. The Burlington Bees (15-16, 3-2) bested the Clinton Lumberkings (21-10, 3-3) 15-7.

 

It was the team's first win on July 3 since joining the Prospect League. 

 

Both teams came out swinging in the first. Clinton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. 

 

The Bees gritted their way back in the bottom of the first. Jace Figuereo (SCC) doubled, Caleb Klein (SCC) walked, and Corey Boyette (Lipscomb) singled to load the bases. 

 

Mason Schwalbach (Southern Illinois) and Kooper Schulte (Iowa) hit sacrifice flies to make it 3-2.

 

Cole Yearsley (Winthrop) was hit by a pitch to put two on.

 

Caleb Seibers (Olney Central) smashed a three-run homer to give Burlington the lead. It was his fifth long bomb of the year. 

 

Clinton made a pitching change and both throwers settled in. 

 

Jackson Rodgers (Western Illinois) threw five innings and got the win. After the first, he let up one run with seven strikeouts. 

 

He put up back to back punchouts to get out of the fifth. It left two runners on.

 

Burlington's offense woke up in the fourth. Yearsley struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch. Seibers followed by reaching on a hit by a pitch. 

 

Dylan Shepherd (Ohio) singled to score Yearsley. He moved to second on an error. 

 

Colin Schmitke (SCC) grounded out to score another. A wild pitch scored Shepherd to make it 8-4. 

 

The Bees scored two runs in the sixth. Boyette got to second with two outs. 

 

Schwalbach followed with an RBI single. 

 

The seventh and eighth saw more offense. Yearsley and Shepherd reached after the stretch on a walk and error.  The error allowed one to score.

 

Schmitke doubled to plate another. He finished with three RBI's.

 

Boyette doubled to start the eighth. Schulte hit an RBI single to score him. It was his thirtieth hit of the year. 

 

Yearsley and Seibers followed with a single and a hit by pitch. Shepherd walked to score another. Schmitke scored another on a sacrifice fly to make it 15-7. 

 

Parker Lewin (Minnesota) struck out five over two innings to finish the game. 

 

The two teams play tomorrow at 6:30 at NelsonCorp Field.
