Bees Swept in Doubleheader at Clinton

Clinton, IA - After a Friday Postponment, the Burlington Bees (10-12) lost both legs of a double header to the Clinton Lumberkings (15-6) at NelsonCorp Field June 21. 

 

The final scores of the two seven inning contests were 4-3 and 11-1. The second game was ended via the run rule in the fifth inning.

 

Clinton has won eight of their last nine, as the team is 6-2 against the Bees this year.

 

GAME 1:

 

After a shutout first, the Lumberkings scored one in the second inning. The team loaded the bases with nobody out, but only plated a run.

 

Reese Ellison (Bethel) got the start for Burlington. After loading the bases, the lefty worked out of the jam with a popout, a bunt single that brought in the run, and back-to-back strikeouts.

 

The Bees scored one run in each of the next three innings.

 

In the third, Caleb Klein (SCC) singled with one out. The Southeast Missouri commit stole second. 


Kooper Schulte (Iowa) registered his team-leading 20th RBI on a single to tie the game. 

 

The bottom of the order came up big in the fourth. Ryan Skwarek (McHenry) walked and Abrahan Rios (SCC) singled to start the frame. 

 

Colin Schmitke (SCC) came up with his first Burlington hit and RBI to score one and make it 2-1.

 

Schulte opened the fifth with a walk. Corey Boyette (Lipscomb) grounded out to move him to second. 

 

With two outs, Keanu Spenser (Hawaii-Pacific) struck an RBI single. It was his 14th RBI of the season.

 

The Lumberkings stunned Burlington with three runs on two hits and an error in the sixth inning.


The Bees left the tying run on base in the seventh to lose the heat-breaker.

 

Ellison's final line was 5.2 innings pitched, six hits, three earned runs and three strikeouts.

 

Kila Teixeira (Hawaii-Pacific) got the final Clinton out. He walked one but allowed no hits or runs in his first appearances on the mound in the summer.

 

Ellison got the loss. Jackson Bruno received the win. Camden Clewett registered the save,

 

GAME 2:

 

Clinton scored 10 times  on five hits in the first inning.

 

Burlington manufactured its only run in the second inning.


Caleb Seibers (Olney Central) singled with one out to get on base.

 

Dylan Shepherd (Ohio) smashed a double into right center field to score one.

 

Kaimana Burgo (Hawaii-Pacific) tossed 2.2 innings. The lefty allowed two earned runs with three strikeouts.


Shawn Scott (Austin Peay) threw the final inning. He surrendered one run and hit, 

 

Danny Harris (Mesa CC) got the loss. 

 

The game ended after the top of the fifth due to the run rule.

 

Clinton plays next tomorrow against the Normal Cornbelters (8-12) at home.

 

The Bees return home for a twin-bill. The team plays a double header against the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp (10-10). The first game begins at 2 p.m. at Community Field
