Bees Have Fun On Community Basket Day
Burlington, IA - The Burlington Bees spent Community Basket Day with an intersquad game and a homerun derby.
The intersquad game saw Assistant Coach Casey Sole's Honeycombs take on the Head Coach Owen Oreskovich's lead Star and Stripes teams.
Highlights of the game included Sole calling his shot before grounding out, Oreskovich throwing up a zero after a shutout inning, the crowd being asked to vote on calls, two interns taking at-bats and general manager Tad Lowary smashing a single. He eventually scored with a dramatic slide into home base.
The final score was 4-4 after six total innings.
The conclusion of the game was followed by a homerun derby. Eight Bees players filled out a bracket style contest.
Contestants included Skyler Agnew (Hawaii-Pacific), Jeremy Figueroa (Mt.Mercy University), Merrick Mathews (University of Iowa), Scotty Savage (Milwaukee Area Tech), Cedric Dunnwald (Mt.Mercy University), Michael Carrano Jr. (Parkland College) and Dillion Kuehl (Des Moines Area CC).
Dunnwald set a precedent and rode it all the way to victory. He took down Boyette in round one with two home runs. In a matchup against Kuehl, Dunnwald smashed three. He finished it off with two against Mathews for the victory.
Community Basket Day saw four winners of various prizes. The 1st prize of $5,000 was won by Colin Beals. The 2nd prize and 3rd prize both of $2,500 saw winners of Kendra Chapin and Bill Dickens. Finally, the Community Basket full of prizes was taken home by Randie Moler.
The team returns to action July 22 at 6:30 p.m. at home.
