Bees Road Struggles Continue
Cape Girardeau, MO - The Burlington Bees (5-19) issues away from home persisted, as the team began its largest road trip of the season with a 11-4 loss to the Cape Catfish (11-3) at Capaha Field June 25.
With the loss,tThe Bees losing streak is extended to eight and the team is 0-11 on the road.
Starting pitching was the name of the game, as Burlington allowed eight earned runs in the first three innings. Meanwhile, the Cape starter, John-Paul Sauer, went for 6.2 innings with two hits and one earned run allowed.
The back-half of the Bees bullpen was able to weather the storm. Kyle Looper (Texas Wesleyan Univ) went for three frames of no-hit, no-run ball with three strikeouts.
Chase Golden (Western Illinois) struck out every batter he faced, letting up a run in one inning. Michael Schaul (Mt. Mercy University) punched out two in his one inning of work, allowing a hit and two earned runs.
The Burlington offense only tallied five hits and did not score until the seventh inning, beginning with Merrick Mathews (University of Iowa) scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-1.
The team tacked on three runs the next stanza. This included a pair of runs on two separate passed balls, which allowed Landon Akers (Bellarmine) and Cooper Donlin (Hawaii-Pacific) to score.
Jackson Lindquist (Rock Valley College) became the only Bee to register an RBI, bringing home Mathews on a sacrifice line-out. He now has eight RBI's on the year.
Mathews finished two for three with a walk and two runs.
Donlin had a one for four day to extend his on-base streak to 14 games. Corey Boyette (Heartland Community College) made his 2024 debut after playing in 28 games last season. He had two walks in his first game of the season.
Burlington continues its road trip in three straight days with a game at the Jackson Rockabillys (14-8). The first match of the set kicks off at 7:00 p.m. June 26.
